It somehow seems appropriate that the death of Russ Meyer and the release of a new John Waters movie should come in the same week. The new one, "A Dirty Shame," is rated NC-17 and includes Tracy Ullman, Chris Isaak and Johnny Knoxville in the cast.
I want to like John Waters. He's always funny on talk shows, and his "Simpsons" cameo some years ago was great. Unfortunately, his last good movie was "Hairspray" in 1988. I think the death of Divine took something out of him.
Cinematic footnote: Long before Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller made dodgeball cool again, "Hairspray" had a great P.E. scene, with the coach barking to the students: "Let's play dodgeball!"
